Ward Foley was born with multiple birth defects and very little chance to live. But he did, only to undergo decades of surgery, agonizing rehabilitation, ridicule, and humiliation. He was also severely burned in a deep fryer, beat up, and almost killed by a drunk driver, But that’s not what this book is about.
It turns out that each “scar” in his life brought Foley one step closer to the people and experiences that would give him what he wanted most.
After the death of a close friend, Foley found himself entering the world of hospice care and a circle of people who had more to teach him than he ever imagined.
You can be in the wrong place at the wrong time . . . a lot. In fact, your whole life can seem like one, big, wrong turn. But that’s exactly what it takes to get you to the one place you want most.
Lively and warm-hearted, full of dry humor and unexpected twists, Thank My Lucky Scars is an exuberant look at what we all ultimately want from life and the story we have been handed.

A Truly Inspirational Book, Even to a SkepticIn one of the many delightful scenes in Ward Foley's Thank My Lucky Scars, his 89-year-old hospice client asks him where they took her mother and whether she'll be coming back. Rather than pointing out the improbability of the situation, Mr. Foley replies, "If she was here earlier, I'm sure she will be back."
Mr. Foley was born with multiple physical deformities and had to undergo countless painful surgeries and rehabilitation. Everything was physically difficult for him, and he experienced considerable taunting as a kid. Through his faith, which he discusses quite honestly and openly, he was able to get through those difficulties and find his calling as a hospice worker, where he learned the art of "being there" and listening.
I was brought up without religion, but there is a certain type of Christian I always get along with--the ones who practice what they preach and love unconditionally rather than point their finger at others. Foley is that type of Christian. He not only finds the good in everything, but also finds God in everything. In his world, significant numbers pop up out of the blue, benign ghosts answer the telephone, and smiley faces appear all over--including on a balloon that appears to have a mind of its own. Angels and other signs crop up throughout the book at crucial times, and many "accident" and "coincidence" turn out to be fortuitous. But what I especially love about Foley's world is that the God he depicts is not only loving, but also quite playful. Having read Thank My Lucky Scars, I realize why it has such a following.

Thank My Lucky Scars edition by Ward Foley Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I am the mom of a child who has arthrogryposis. I met Ward through our online community support group. I always knew he was an amazing guy but I had NO IDEA how amazing until I read his book.
Thank My Lucky Scars is a wonderful uplifting book that is good for the soul. An easy, uplifting read. Enjoy it!
I'm bummed this book ended because I'll miss spending time with Ward each day! I'm a better person and closer to God because of Ward's book. I could never thank him enough for writing it! Feels like God meant it just for me, but, believe me, it's for all of us!
Inspiring
Just love Ward Foley, 'Scarman'!!! I have heard him speak and he was witty, funny, but brought home what a person can deal with positively if they want to. I know he is amazing inspiration to countless children and adults with all kinds of disabilities
This is an inspirational story, even for those of us to rebel against inspirational stories. Ward Foley is not merely a survivor, but a real hero to my mind. I know, I know, memoirs shouldn't have heroes, and I don't think this was Foley's intention--to be called a hero--but rather, it simply happened that I came to think of him as one.
There is no sobbing nor are there tales of grandeur. This book is a simply told, a heart-tugging story of a real life, a man who endured and learned to define his own reality through faith and hopefulness.
Ward "Scarman" Foley is one the most inspirational people I have been blessed to know. He is not about religion, he is about faith. He is one of the first and most important people I turned to when my son, Derek, who first introduced me to Ward, died by suicide. I turn to him still today. I have read this book several times, it's at the top of my list when I need inspiration and hope. I have also been privileged to hear Ward speak several times as he travels the county sharing his story. Each time I hear him speak, I am amazed all over again. Ward reminds us all in Thank My Lucky Scars that we are not given a good life or a bad life. We are given life, and it's up to each of us to make it a good one. And by his example, Ward shows each of us that in the face of tragedy and diversity, we can rise above the obstacles and not let them define us. I honestly don't know where I would be today without the love, support and inspiration of Ward Foley. God has given me a special angel, I call him friend.
Thank My Lucky Scars in an inspirational and courageous memoir - a memoir that's both deep and humorous, and always thought-provoking. With an open heart Ward Foley describes the disabilities brought forth from a rare congenital disorder called Arthrogryosis Multiplex Congenita. This is a horrific, complex, and disfiguring disorder that involves much physical suffering and emotional pain.
But there is no pity-party here! Ward tells his wonderfully straightforward story with astounding grace and humor. His unshakable faith (which is never preachy) is the foundation from which he has built a remarkable and giving life. From his commendable work with hospice patients to those who face disabilities, Ward has dedicated himself to helping others, inspiring others, and bringing hope. This is a wonderful memoir that I highly recommend.
